Crater Lake

Mount Mazama, a peak formed by a succession of overlapping volcanoes, had a cataclysmic eruption 7,700 years ago. Spewing rocks and ash up nearly 30 miles into the air, the sheer force and volume of the magma caused the 12,000 foot peak to collapse into the empty magma chamber. As it continued to erupt, it continued to collapse, leaving in its place a five-mile wide, 4,000 feet deep depression, known as a caldera. As time moved on, more eruptions sealed the caldera and rain and water from the melting snows began to fill the hole and give us what we know today as Crater Lake - the deepest lake in the United States. Here is the story of our three-day trip from the Upper Willamette Valley to this amazing sight, and all the stops in between.

Breitenbush Hot Springs

I spent an amazing day at the Breitenbush Hot Springs a while back. The entrance fee included activities, hot pools, and an awesome, vegetarian lunch. This is a place I highly recommend - it really is a place of balance. First let me tell you what my life had been like back then. Finances stretched so tight the next ding is going to cause it to explode - I got the flu - husband had to go to the emergency room (additional stretches to the already stretched budget). I'm trying to find a higher paying job and from five interviews so far, I've had five rejections with no feedback. I was tense, depressed and feeling rather hopeless. Enter Breitenbush. A gift certificate to this place was shared with me. Sounded great! We got there, checked in, and headed down the path to the lodge.

The Painted Hills of Oregon

Off in the North East corner of Oregon lives the John Day Fossil beds. An amazing place full of prehistoric history and geological wonders!
